This is likely my last post before my Christmas holidays start and my trek to visit my brother and his amazing family begin.
I grew up in Calgary, Alberta. I left when I was around twenty and slowly, in a progression of steps, made my way eastward. Finally arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Canada is a huge place. Approximately 7200 kilometers from coast to coast and I love every bit I have had the fortune to see. I’m grateful to live in this country in ways I can’t begin to count. Geographically, ethnically, politically, socially, and economically Canada is diverse. Stereotypes aside, the people differ, the communities differ. Calgary was an amazing place to grow up. Perfectly situated with mountains and glaciers, prairies and farms, and deserts and dunes. It wasn’t until I left and started to experience the rest of the country that it began to dawn on me it might not be the right place for me. I’m grateful I was able to stick my toe in a few places, liking them all, but never settling.
I owe an old friend a huge debt for getting me to Halifax. This is my “Home”. It’s where I’ve built my life, it’s where my relationships are, and it’s where my heart is. The maritimes are are a wonderful place. Filled with great people with great attitudes. A lust for life that seems somehow less affected by the chaos in the world. The people here have embraced me as I have them. I wake up every morning to see the ocean. It gives me energy, inspires me, and humbles me.
This is where I was meant to be. This is “Home”.
The image above was taken a few weeks ago off Briar Island. A very chilly boat ride! It’s simple and probably over processed but I like it all the same.
PS. This is also my 25th post since I began this ClosedFocus experiment. Thanks to everyone reading this. Keep an eye out for some new developments in the New Year!
