Casa Loma

It’s been a long time since my last post. Apologies for that. I’ve taken on way too much the last few months and something had to give. New years resolution is to do better. My photography and thought process always seem to improve when I’m blogging.

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to travel to Toronto where I was able to visit my good friends. Whenever I visit they always have something fun planned where we can take our cameras and burn the day! Equal parts location scouts and inspiration. Plus they are both GREAT photographers in their own right (better than me). This months trip took us to Casa Loma or as they call it, Camelot.

I haven’t been there in 15 or 20 years but when you’re visiting a castle things don’t really change. What I’ve been shooting and how I’m presenting and interpreting it has changed in the past little while however. I assume this has to do with my inability to get out and shoot what would be my normal subject matter of landscape. I really do enjoy what I’ve been shooting lately though.

I was thinking back to when I was studying photography. One of the best assignments I ever shot was for a class on shooting and producing slide shows. A friend and I managed to weasel our way into an old blues club called Chicago’s on Toronto’s Queen West. The place oozed history and had kind of an eerie vibe when empty at 3 am. I’m sure no one would call what I shot documentary in the traditional sense but I really did feel I was telling a story about the place, disjointed though in individual images might have been.

I haven’t really thought this out for myself but I think I’m just less literal in my story telling. Anyway I think the last couple of post here have me back working in that frame of mind. I sounds strange but I like the idea of being able to describe a place by demonstrating the details and never really showing the whole. Perhaps viewers wouldn’t agree. who knows.

Anyway, the images included here are intended to convey the mood of Casa Loma as well how my few hours of experience there shaped my interpretation of it.

Just talking out loud. I hope you enjoy the images!
