A Moment…

It’s strange how fleeting a moment can be at times.  You have to be ready and open to it or you’ll miss out.

Not missing out on moments is important in photography and in life. Perhaps thats why over the years the process of photography has contributed so much to my personal life.

I pulled into Lawrencetown beach. Late. The light was amazing and I was really excited to spend the next few minutes finding ways to use it. When I got out of the car, I saw the fence and grass all lit up out of the corner of my eye. I took a moment to get all my gear in order when a voice inside me told me to go shoot the fence. NOW!

The above picture is from the first 5 frames I shot that day. Five minutes later, before I even had a chance to crest the hill to the beach, the light disappeared behind a cloud and never came back.

Moments are everything. Yes, it’s just a stupid fence in the parking lot of a beach. But I’m grateful that one day before my 42nd birthday, I don’t see it as a stupid fence. I’m proud that I’m not to busy or too jaded to see beauty in the mundane. I’m grateful I care.

As I write this I’m wearing a t-shirt that says, “Ask your teacher to take you outside.” Seems apt. Put down the computer and go outside!
